The title Vanitas refers to the term used to describe Northern European still life paintings of the 16th and 17th centuries. The idea of Vanitas art is to point to the fragile and temporary nature of life. This piece is comprised of several very short lived life forms at an unlikely gathering. The large Madagascar Comet Moth only lives two weeks and has no mouth. the Red Eft at the base is a salamander in a transitional stage, where its color and physical makeup changes to allow it to leave the water and seek new territory, the Eft will then change back and resume its aquatic life once it finds a new home. The Orchid and butterflies are fantasy species. The Orchids leaves are borrowed from the Death Camas herb/flower (a nod to mortality) The flower struggles to grow from a shallow bit of soil among the rocks, finding a way to thrive.
