Candy McManimanBeing constantly aware of the detrimental progress we impose on the natural environment seems to impose a dilemma to wildlife artists. Do you just depict the beauty that inspires you or can you also raise awareness of its vulnerability. In this piece, In Decline, I have included the bar graph of the surveys taken on the Red-breasted Geese that winter in Bulgaria. A photo I took of the shot-up sign indicating the refuge area is also part of the painting. These geese, who winter here are about 80-90% of the world population and the hunting disturbance, land management changes and other development in the area pose a threat to their future. The good news is that Birdlife in Bulgaria has just recently partnered with Wildfowland Wetlands Trust and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds(UK) and with a budget of over 2,656,608 Pounds they will be implementing an action plan to stabilize this delcine of one of the most beautiful and most threatened goose species in the world.
Taking an early retirement from teaching, my husband and I now have the opportunity to visit some of the unique areas of the world. The inspiration for an Artists is limitless .
