sometimes I wish I were a fish
Date: Monday, August 16, 2010 to Sunday, September 5, 2010 Location: the art exchange gallery LONDON, ONTARIO
Details: Review by Beth Stewart of "the BEAT Arts in London". Sometimes I wish I were a fish".... successfully marries the figurative work of Candy McManiman with the flat decorative work of Annette Martin. The result is a thoughtful and enchanting exhibition.
McManiman is drawn to the natural world , in particular she is attracted to birds, an interest encouraged by her biologists husband. Years of observing birds- their anatomical features and habits - has honed her ability to produce very detailed, realistic paintings. Her work tends to highlight the impact we humans have on other living species and vice versa. For example, her acrylic painting, "Station1, Ablution" shows a cleaner wrasse calmly swimming through a flooded church interior. Fluent in a variety of media, McManiman often combines photography and collage in her paintings. In this exhibition she juxtaposes her crisp photographs with acrylic paintings in which she plays with light, colour and design..............
