Owl on Wheels
One late frigid night driving on a secondary road I encountered what I thought was a brown bag tossed onto the road. I slowed and veered to pass by and heard 'thunk' on my door. I turned my car and returned to find a screech owl that had been hit previously that late icy night. The owl was huddled in the centre of the road where I often encounter a red fox on the hunt.
I lifted the owl in my gloved hands. It made no protest as I held it in my headlight beam. He was in shock and stunned. I held him in my hands to warm him. Fortunately I had a small corrugated box and some clean jersey in my car so I made him as comfortable as I could in the passenger side of my car. He would not relinquish my glove so I left it in him grasp and put a blanket over the box.
I looked on line that late night to get help. It was needed to leave Fenelon Falls for Vaughan where I teach art to children 6 to 14 years each Saturday. So the owl went to school until I could find a safe place for him. He was clam, quiet and very alert.
When I finished teaching I purchased some ground chicken. Owls don't drink water they get hydrated by the food they eat. I didn't have and mice handy.

I emailed asking all I knew where there might be a sanctuary not too far away. I learned about Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary in Minden. I spoke with Monika and arranged to drive this wee owl north.

Monika examined the owl and found he was not too dehydrated (even though he did not eat the ground chicken). He would need to be x-rayed and his right eye was in bad shape.

I left the owl to her tender care and receive updates on his condition from Monika. I decided this feisty little screech owl needed a name so I call him 'Thunk'. That is how he introduced himself to me.

Please see Woodlands Wildlife Sanctuary's Facebook page if you would like to follow 'Thunk's' healing. He will be transported to the owl centre in Niagara to receive care. Monika has also posted a video on YouTube. Please see www.woodlandswildlifesanctuary.ca for more information.

Blessings to all the people who tirelessly use their skills and there time to care for these beautiful creatures.
