Arctic Quest
Date: Saturday, July 22, 2006 to Thursday, August 3, 2006 Location: High Arctic, Baffin Island, Greenland
Details: RoseMarie is an artist coordinator for Arctic Quest, a group of 25 Canadian painters who will travel to the High Arctic this summer. Arctic Quest artists will celebrate the centennary of Norwegian explorer Roald Amundsen's completion of Canada's Northwest Passge. We will also interact with Inuit artists and school children of Nunavut in an effort to build bridges on communication between the Canada's north and south. Following in the footsteps of early artists and explorers RoseMarie will sketch, explore and photograph the awe inspiring Arctic landscape with the hope of creating new footsteps for future artists. 100 YEARS OF THE NORTHWEST PASSAGE BEGINNINGS Arctic Quest celebrates the 100th anniversary of the first successful crossing of Canada's Northwest Passage by explorer, Roald Amundsen. Roberta Bondar was on hand to help launch our vision for Arctic Quest. Along with Roberta, renowned artist, Doris McCarthy shared many of her experiences of her time in the high Arctic painting and working with local Inuit artists. CANADIAN ARCTIC 1906 - Norwegian explorer, Roald Amundsen completed the first successful navigation of the Northwest Passage. That historic voyage focused attention on the importance of Canada's High Arctic, politically, culturally, environmentally and artistically. 100 years later, a group of 25 artists will celebrate that anniversary by visiting many of the same locations that Amundsen visited during his journey. Significant to the artists is the appreciation of the history of the Arctic, its environment, educational aspects and the culture of the Inuit people. Just as Amundsen connected the east with the west, the artists will continue joint projects and initiatives, connecting the north with the rest of Canada. Exchanges of culture through the arts enhances Canada's understanding and appreciation of the rich heritage of the Inuit people. JULY 2006 Roots of the Northwest Passage In the summer of 2006, the journey will begin in Iqaluit, Nunavut and travel up through the high Arctic by ship, re-tracing much of Amundsen's route. Making stops along the shores of Greenland, and into the Northwest Passage, the artists will paint, sketch and photograph, collecting reference for future paintings for exhibit. After 12 days at sea, the trip will end in Resolute and the artists fly back to Toronto to begin a year of painting and exhibitions. A YEAR OF CELEBRATION Back in the studio, the artists will begin painting their experiences of the Arctic. The work will form an exhibit that will travel across Canada, into the United States and even some galleries in other circumpolar countries.
Alix Macdonald,as a producer/director for Discovery network and has traveled all over the world will produce a TV documentary about the artistic voyage of the Northwest Passage. The film will examine the history of art in the north, the artistic voyage and the Inuit arts community.
