Deborah LaFogg Docherty’s art combines her great two loves: her love of nature and her love of painting. She has been studying wildlife in it’s natural habitat since she was a child on her family’s farm in Connecticut. Whenever she had a chance she would draw and paint, each was always about wildlife. Her paintings strive to give people a glimpse of how animals live in the wild, raise their young, court and survive. She paints a picture of a secret world that many never get a chance to see. Deborah’s quest to paint wildlife has taken her across the United States from the Everglades National Park in Florida to Denali National Park in Alaska. It has become an adventure she loves to share.
Her formal training began in college with a dual major in illustration and commercial art. She has continued to advance her work through master artist workshops. It is from them that she began to not only focus on the wildlife, but on the landscape in which they live. The use of light, color, composition, texture, and atmosphere help bring the viewer into the secret world of nature. She is always learning new ways to communicate this through her work. Deborah’s paintings come to life in pastels, acrylics and oils.
Deborah has spent a lot of time in art museums in Europe and the US. To her it’s a chance to be reminded of where it all began. On a trip to Paris she visited the Museum of the Impressionist is where she was able to see Degas work, one of the first notable pastelists. His pastel paintings moved her. The pure color and contrast brought them to life.
She received the Masters Circle award from the International Association of Pastel Societies, Whose Who In American Art in pastel and countless other awards throughout her career. Her work has been featured in museums, national and international art shows and International magazines. Her work can be found in private collections and she has illustrated a children’s book with part of the proceeds going to save habitat critical habitat in the Florida Keys.
Thus year Deborah began doing demonstrations in pastel and is teaching classes/workshops which she is very excited about doing. For more information please look for updates on www.lafogg.com.
