Highlands Nature Sanctuary |
|
|
You are invited to join the staff and volunteers of the Highlands Nature Sanctuary who are preserving a landscape of hope in the Arc of Appalachia. This committed, passionate group is: restoring the Eastern Old-Growth Forest, bringing Nature back into our lives, creating a large wilderness reserve in the eastern U.S., and protecting the bio-diversity of Life. The Arc of Appalachia is a 75-mile crescent of land lying along the Appalachian Front -- a rich and bio-diverse region where the foothills touch the western glaciated plains of southern Ohio. The first preservation reserve in the region -- Highlands Nature Sanctuary -- was founded in 1995 along this Arc in the botanically-rich cave region of the Rocky Fork Gorge. This breathtakingly beautiful preserve -- filled with springs, caves, rare plants and stunning rock cliffs -- is already 1700 acres in size, and growing every year. The folks at Highlands are now working to expand their efforts in the Arc by seeding a second nature preserve system thirty miles south of the Highlands -- deep in the heart of the prairie-lands of Adams County. A fund-raising drive is underway to buy the very first tract in this area of the Arc. The tract is Ka-ma-ma Prairie (Eastern Cherokee for butterfly), spanning eighty acres and sheltering 40 rare and endangered plant species, as well as providing a home to an astonishing diversity of reptiles and butterflies. Connect!!! E-mail director@highlandssanctuary.org and ask to receive monthly updates about educational programs, specific properties to be preserved, and land steward opportunities in which you can participate to promote "woodland sprawl". |
