BROWN ANOLE PORTRAIT
(2008)
Subject: Brown Anole Dimensions (inches): 6 x 9 Medium: acrylic on illustration board Description: Probably Florida's most common reptile, the Brown Anole (Anolis sagrei) was first introduced accidentally from Cuba into Dade County in the 1960s. Since that time, it has spread through most of the state, and into adjacent Georgia and Alabama, where it has largely displaced the native Green Anole (A. carolinensis). Here, a male Brown Anole suns beside a bracket fungus of the genus Pycnoporus. When displaying for a female, this reptile erects crests on its head and back while extending a brilliant yellow and scarlet dewlap, or throat-fan.
