CAREL PIETER BREST van KEMPEN has spent brief periods living in many places, but has never felt compelled to move his stereo out of Salt Lake County, Utah, where he was born and raised. A self-taught artist, he has painted full-time since 1989. He is a member of the Society of Animal Artists, who selected him as one of thirteen "Master Members." Over the past 25 years, he has been awarded their highest honor, the "Award of Excellence," eight times, more than any other artist. In 2009 the AFC awarded him their "Medal of Excellence." His work has been exhibited worldwide in such venues as The Smithsonian, The American Museum of Natural History, The British Museum and The National Museum of Taiwan. He has illustrated a number of books and has recently authored one. Carel is kind to small children and often gives spare change to panhandlers. He lives with his conscience in Salt Lake City.
