Ron PlaizierFrom an early age, art has been more of a way of life for me rather than a vocation. For this reason, I may not have seen Art as a career, but more as a way of expressing my appreciation and love for nature and wildlife. Art becomes something that defines who you are rather then something you do to make a living. Art was always something that brought me solace and peace of mind, allowing me to escape to a world of self-indulgence, focusing on a single goal without distraction, without complication.
I was blessed to have a mother who nourished and supported that creativity she saw in me at an early age by providing me with different mediums to work with, but never pushing me in one direction or another. Sharing a common interest in Art with her allowed me to experiment with clay, wood, soapstone, as well as traditional mediums of acrylic paint, pastel.
Paralleling my interest in Art at an early age was my interest in wildlife and more specifically birds. There is something truly magical about birds, with their ability to defy gravity whether it’s soaring at dizzying heights or flitting from one tree branch to another but more interesting to me is their diversity and uniqueness in shape, colour and size. Each species designed with specific skills and purpose to survive in the animal kingdom.
In the 90’s I took a keen interest in wood carving and became quite proficient in carving wildfowl, competing at the professional level in competitions. The time spent focusing on the specific anatomy and detail of birds in the 3D form allowed me to develop a true appreciation for these winged wonders of our animal world. This appreciation extended to my present preferred medium which is acrylic paint on canvas.
I know it may be cliché for a Wildlife Artist to say that my inspiration comes from nature itself, but I honestly don’t know any other way of describing where it comes from. What truly inspires me is not only their intricate beauty but perhaps their ability to endure anything nature and mankind throw at them. Having said that though I think it’s important for us to realize the importance of conservation and preservation of habitat. Birds are very much environmental indicators for our surroundings and if we compromise the world they live in, we also compromise our world.
When I paint birds I make every effort to capture them in their natural setting and to present them to you in a composition that is both balanced and compelling. It’s important to me that my paintings offer more than just a detailed and close-up view of these winged wonders, but that it also allows your eyes to wander and be drawn to different elements, such as colour, composition, lighting and eventually luring you to the focal point.
I hope you enjoy my paintings every bit as much as I enjoy painting them.
