Alison Nicholls and Gregory Rasmussen will jointly present the lecture, titled "Africa's Painted Dogs". Gregory Rasmussen will speak about African Wild Dogs (known as Painted Dogs in Zimbabwe) and why they are endangered. He will also explain why he started PDC and how the project works closely with local communities to conserve the species. Alison will discuss her AFC Flag Expedition to PDC, how she sketches in the African bush and why she uses her art to raise awareness of endangered species.
The Explorers Club was founded in 1904. By supporting research and education, the club promotes the exploration of land, sea, air and space. Explorers Club members have achieved amazing feats - first to the North Pole, first to the South Pole, first to the summit of Mount Everest, first to the deepest point in the ocean and first to the surface of the moon.
Historically, artists have played a vital role in exploration and expedition history. Alison aims to continue this tradition and was delighted to be elected to membership of the Explorers Club recently. She will display a number of paintings there for the evening of the lecture.
"Africa's Painted Dogs" is part of the club's ongoing public lecture series and will be held on March 9th 2009. The lecture is open to the public. Tickets are $20 for non-members and available in advance from the Explorers Club. Pre-lecture drinks start at 6.30pm and the lecture runs from 7pm - 8.30pm. Please visit www.explorers.org for further details.
