Andean Cat Project |
|
Andean Cats (Oraileurus jacobita) are little-known predators of the Altiplano area of Peru, a harsh, semiarid high mountain habitat at the juncture of Peru, Bolivia, Chile and Argentina. Somewhat resembling their big cousin the Snow Leopard in pattern and color, these little cats are shot and trapped for their skins, and are now the most endangered small cat of the Americas. Jim Sanderson of the Small Cat Conservation Alliance undertakes field studies to determine population numbers and habitat needs, at the same time working closely with local rural villagers to find ways to protect their livestock from predation as well as to help them learn the value of the cats in the overall environment. As artist and scientist, Mark and Dr. Sanderson are collaborating on the creation of a compelling portrait of the Andean Cat in hopes that proceeds from a limited edition print series and auction of an original painting will, with the support of an as yet unsecured sponsor, help protect this exquisite small cat. The art and photography of both environmentalists are featured in the award- winning book WILD CATS by John E. Becker (2008 Darby Creek Publishing). Photo c 2008 Jim Sanderson. |
