Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher - Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher  by Carel Brest van Kempen
  Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher  (2004)
Subject: Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher
Dimensions (inches): 10 x 8
Medium: Acrylic on clayboard
Description: In the region of New Guinea, a genus of five dazzling little kingfishers haunts the forest understories. The paradise kingfishers (Tanysiptera spp.) are immediately recognizable by the two long central tail streamers and glittering blue plumage of the adults. Unlike most kingfishers, these birds do not fish, but hunt arthropods and small reptiles on the forest floor. Perhaps the most beautiful of all five is the Buff-breasted Paradise Kingfisher (T. sylvia) of Northeastern Australia and Eastern New Guinea. The nominate subspecies is depicted here, which breeds on Australia's Cape York Peninsula and winters in Southeastern Papua New Guinea.
