PHOTOTROPE
(2013)
Subject: Leatherback hatchling Dimensions (inches): 20 x 16 Medium: acrylic Description: Beginning life with a shell length of two inches, the critically endangered Leatherback (Dermochelys coriacea) are the biggest modern turtles, and can attain seven feet and three-quarters of a ton, although only a tiny percentage survive the first few years. Like other sea turtles, the hatchlings are attracted to light, an instinct that, under normal circumstances, leads them to water. Artificial lights near nesting beaches can play havoc with reproductive success, drawing the little reptiles inland to their demise.
