EXCLAMATORY PARADISE WHYDAH
(2010)
Subject: Exclamatory Paradise Whydah Dimensions (inches): 10 x 8 Medium: acrylic Description: The whydahs comprise 8 species of brood-parasitic African finches that are closely related to the indigobirds. Typical of the group is the Exclamatory Paradise Whydah (Vidua interjecta), named for the punctuation mark evoked by the breeding male in flight. This species ranges along a narrow strip of southern Sahel from Senegal east to Ethiopia. In late Summer, the males begin displaying in the air and from perches. After mating, the females lay their eggs in nests of finches of the genus Pytilia, where the young are raised by unwitting Foster parents.
