BAMBOO OWLET BUTTERFLY ON HELICONIA - Butterfly by Carel Brest van Kempen
BAMBOO OWLET BUTTERFLY ON HELICONIA  (2005)
Subject: Butterfly
Dimensions (inches): 8 x 4
Description: The owlet butterflies of the subfamily Brassolinae are conspicuous insects of the American tropics. Large in size and characterized by complex underwing patterns featuring fine vermiculations and one or more eyespots on each hindwing, the adults haunt deep jungles, where they feed on rotting fruit and other soft organic matter. Caterpillars of the genus Eryphanis subsist on bamboo. Pictured is the adult E. aesacus, which ranges throughout the Neotropical region, although it appears to be uncommon in Central America.
