CPT was founded in 1981 in Pittsboro, North Carolina. Our 55-acre compound is now home to approximately 140 animals representing 11 species of threatened and endangered carnivores from around the world. These include tigers, spotted leopards, snow leopards, jaguars, ocelots, servals, caracals, binturongs, and more. Some of these animals are seed dispersers, pollinators, and pest-controlling predators called keystone species, meaning they are vital to their ecosystems. The loss of a keystone species causes collapse of an ecosystem, usually due to over-population of rodents formerly held in check by a carnivore, or due to the lack of a crucial task, such as seed dispersal. Our large cats were mainly rescues, while most of our small carnivores were previously part of a selective breeding program designed to preserve and diversify the gene pools of these threatened and endangered species. CPT houses the largest captive population binturongs (Asian bearcats) in the United States. |
