Finding that special work of art can be fun, and challenging. It can be an excellent investment over time as well as a family heirloom to be appreciated for generations. To help you in your quest for the perfect nature art piece, we've put together some considerations to help you find the right masterpiece for you.

Finding a particular type of Nature Art

If you are an art collector, you will find a number of tools to simplify the task of finding the nature art you want. You may search for a specific artist, a subject or a medium. Simply use the convenient “search” window on the home page. You may also choose to browse for something that appeals to you by visiting the site frequently and looking at the regularly updated “shows”.  There is the People's Choice Show plus an Artist of the Day and a Current Exhibit. You can also go to individual artists’ sites that have recently updated their information.

Often the artwork shown on the site is a sample of the artist's work. There may be artwork that has not been scanned for the Internet or there may be work in progress. If you like the work of a specific artist feel free to contact them directly and consider commissioning them to do a specific piece.

Purchasing Artwork on the AFC Site

If you are interested in a particular artists' work, please contact that artist (or their representative) directly. Although the AFC provides a convenient mechanism for collectors to buy directly from its members, the AFC itself DOES NOT DIRECTLY BROKER ARTWORK or get involved in any way in artist-buyer transactions. The Group receives no brokerage fee or marketing fee for any work sold through the site. As such, we are unable to respond to purchasing inquiries relating to either members or non-members.

Artists (or their representatives) can be contacted directly with the contact information provided on their page and many artists have made provision for purchasing artwork by credit card directly from their Web pages.

Deciding What to Purchase
We wish to thank Linda Besse, a member of the AFC for allowing us to reprint below her suggestions on buying artwork and prints. You can see Linda’s work at www.natureartists.com/bessel.htm

One of the most important questions to ask yourself when deciding to purchase is, "Will I like this image tomorrow?" Is there something the artist has captured which is special to me? Maybe it reminds you of something that has special meaning or maybe the piece has subtle lighting, a unique perspective or interaction, or tells an engaging story. The composition might draw you. Whatever the reason, if the image gives you joy, or ignites your spirit, it is one to consider.

There have been articles written stating one should never purchase artwork to match the furniture. I tend to have a more moderate view. If you hope to enjoy the art tomorrow, there is nothing wrong in having it reflect your preference for colors, design, and theme. For instance, if your living room has soft blues and whites, a bright orange piece while engaging today might have worn out its welcome tomorrow. On the other hand, if the art "grabs" you and you can picture it on your wall, diversity in decorating can energize a room.

It may interest you to know that many artists have other artists’ work hanging on their walls. For me, if I see a piece and I can’t get it out of my mind, that is the deciding factor. That painting or print just speaks to me. Many I’ve had over a decade in the same spot, and they still move me.

Buying Prints

Is a Print a GOOD Investment?

While prints may appreciate in value, I don’t believe they should be considered as an investment (except as an investment in beauty.) Prints are traded on the secondary market, but that market does not have one regular outlet available for trading. Trading is irregular, non-regulated and the artwork if not framed properly (or cared for properly if unframed) may have deteriorated and not be in prime condition. One of the best sources for the current value of prints is INFORMART  magazine but even they admit their information is not all-inclusive.

The safest measure is to purchase a print because you like it - it moves you. See How do I decide to purchase? to help you in your decision process.

Note: There is much more information on the different media under the tab “about art media” which is important to be aware of in your buying decisions. The best customer is an informed one.
