Having grown up on the BC coast, and spending nearly a decade as a commercial fisherman, the wild and rugged shores have truly inspired Esther’s artwork. In her fishing career, she experienced the rare opportunity of traveling through and working in some of BC’s most remote and wildest waters. Hiding from storms in the tiniest of coves, hauling gear out in the open ocean, traveling through passages amongst porpoises, whales and eagles, the coast whispered just a few of its secrets to her, sharpened her artistic eye and deepened her passion to express it on canvas. For Esther, painting has largely been a self-taught process. Through hours of trial and error, and endless practicing, she continues to hone her skills. Beginning her painting process with watercolours in the early 90‘s, Esther has painted through to acrylics and currently paints in oil. Today, you can find Esther in her studio daily, or perhaps out on the local beaches and estuaries, painting, pulling from landscapes, blending in her life’s experiences, chasing the ever elusive light in the hunt to create beautiful paintings. In 2011, Esther was the first woman to win the Pacific Salmon Foundation’s annual sport fishing salmon stamp award with the painting “Hunger Strikes”. She has been published in numerous books and magazines. Her work is collected throughout the world, and shows in Canada and USA. Esther has been a guest speaker for several organizations, sharing her life stories and artwork.

The Federation of Canadian Artists (FCA) was founded in 1941 by a group of Canadian artists, including the Group of Seven luminary, Lawren Harris. The FCA continues to operate as a registered not for profit society with Chapters throughout Canada. The FCA is dedicated to raising artistic standards by stimulating participants to greater heights of knowledge and achievement by offering what is believed to be the first completely artists sponsored gallery and workshop studio in Canada. The mission of the FCA is to advance the knowledge and appreciation of art and culture to all Canadians, and to promote emerging as well as professional member artists. The Federation Gallery is located on Granville Island, Vancouver, BC, featuring bi-monthly juried exhibitions of works by emerging and signature artists. There are two juried international shows held annually, Painting on the Edge and AIRS. The FCA occasionally holds other special collaborative shows with other art societies. An extensive education program which is open to non-members as well as members, offers workshops, classes, critiques and lectures in the fine arts media, with instruction by successful established artists who can help artists to explore and develop their artistic interest and talent. Membership in the FCA is open to all who appreciate art.
