Josephine Anne Smith was trained at the Ealing College of Art, London, England. A direct descendent of Holman Hunt, the founder of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood of Artists, her works have received international acclaim for their accuracy, attention to fine detail and sympathetic interpretation.Published by leading publishing houses in England and Australia, her paintings are distributed worldwide and she is represented in many public and private collections throughout the world.
During the early part of her career whilst painting in England, she specialised in painting horses and African wildlife. On moving to Australia in 1984 she was struck by the beauty and diversity of the Australian wildlife, particularly the birds, and she very quickly established herself as one of Australia's leading wildlife artists.
Well known for her exquisitely painted limited edition calendars featuring Australian birds, she has also provided the artwork for greeting cards, limited edition and open prints, book illustrations, and her work has been featured in the prestigious Oz Art magazine.
Her first Australian one-man show held in Sydney in 1987 was a sellout, a prelude to the many equally successful shows she has had since that date.
With her studio located in 5 acres of bushland at Mount Col4 New South Wales, home to over 70 species of native birds, Josephine says, "It's a paradise here. Other artists have to research and track down the birds, but 1 just step outside and paint them from life. In my paintings 1 try to represent the joy I feel when I see a certain bird or animal."
In such an environment she is able to capture on canvas first hand the beauty, accurate colouring, realistic action and background settings which have made her paintings so much in demand worldwide.
