This thirst emboldens them to approach the dark water, filled with fears of the unnatural things lurking just beneath the surface and those who are motionless in the nearby grass. There is a careful scouting and a cautious approach as the herd nears the water. At the indication of the slightest alarm – the breaking of a twig, of the flutter of a wing – the fear-consumed herd makes a sudden and chaotic retreat away from the dark water.
