Description: To many American Indians the buffalo was considered sacred, as it provided them sustenance.
The stone used for this sculpture, onyx marble, was so highly prized by the Aztecs it was deemed too sacred to be used for mortal purposes, and was used exclusively for the ornamentation of religious edifaces and sacrificial vessels.
