Beauty on the Bruce
(2013)
Subject: White-Tailed Deer Dimensions (inches): 24 x 30 Medium: Oil on Braced Baltic Birch Description: For those unfamiliar with southern Ontario, the Bruce Trail is a 900 km hiking path along the Niagara Peninsula, enjoyed by outdoor enthusiasts like our family. This painting was commissioned by friends who live near Felker's Falls along this hiking trail. White-tailed deer used to frequent their property in the early morning hours, but due to construction and housing developments, the deer have become more scarce. Using their photos and my own as references, I captured the scene of a buck and doe meandering through the wild grass field adjacent to their property on a misty fall morning. I've always wanted to paint an old split-wood fence, as I love how organic they feel compared to metal fences, so this was an opportunity to do that. I hoped to infuse a sense of mystery and beauty into the painting through the foggy background and the doe's backward glance, contrasted with the buck's confident advance into the light.
