Swallows of Misty Wharf - Barn Swallows by Josh Tiessen
  Swallows of Misty Wharf  (2013)
Subject: Barn Swallows
Dimensions (inches): 18 x 30
Medium: Acrylic on Birch
Description: A feeling of exhilaration came over me on the misty morning my family explored the coastal drive between Peggy's Cove and Lunenberg. I couldn't resist stopping at every little fishing village along the winding road, which meandered around bays and coves with the anticipation of what could be discovered beyond the next curve. Each time I hopped out of the car camera in hand, I was accosted by the smell of salty air repugnant with fish and rotting wood. Misty Wharf is a representational place, which is a composite of many similar structures supporting humble little fishing shacks. The mist was gently lifting from the reflective water as the morning sun broke through overcast clouds, sharply illuminating anything in its path. A few Barn Swallows swooped out from their homes below the docks and into the light. Barn Swallows prefer man-made structures to make their nests, and live in close proximity to human inhabitants. However, I was struck with the fact that these fisheries seemed so deserted, almost like little ghost towns regardless of what time of day we travelled through. The fishing industry in Eastern Canada was once very strong, but due to over-fishing and modernization, these small fisheries have greatly declined. The tourism industry has helped to partially fill the financial gap, but one couldn't help but notice the poor conditions in these villages. These wharfs still remain and are in regular use, preserved in their natural state except for the humble shacks and quaint homes painted in traditional bright Maritime colours. As has become my style, I chose a limited darkly saturated colour palette that included complementary colours of mainly cool and some warm touches to harmonize the composition and contribute to the consistency and impact of the piece. Through this painting I hoped to illustrate my experiences and the feelings that are evoked by memories.
