Ocean Blues
(2011)
Dimensions (inches): 26.5 x 45 Medium: Oil Description: Blue whales are widely considered the largest creatures to ever dwell on earth. Everything about them — from their immense size to their prodigious appetites — is superlative. In Ocean Blues, Wyland captures one of the rarest sights on earth: a festive congregation of blue whales and calves under an iridescent sky. 'As an artist and a naturalist, I look for moments that capture the essence of an animal,' Wyland says. 'That might be a certain behavior or a grouping of animals in their natural environment. In this painting, I created my ideal image of blue whales moving together through silent, serene seas. Even now, the thought of coming upon a scene like this in the open ocean touches my soul.'
