Bateman Centre on Victoria Harbour |
8/20/2012 - The Bateman Centre will have an art gallery located on the Victoria waterfront with the opening scheduled for spring 2013.
Within the past few months, the Robert Bateman Foundation has been formed with charitable status to promote connection to nature.
An amazing opportunity came a few months ago. The Greater Victoria Harbour Authority was looking for an anchor tenant for the heritage (1924) CPR Terminal Building on the waterfront. It had just been upgraded and earthquake proofed, and is located next to the Legislature and within walking distance to the Empress Hotel and the Royal BC Museum.
The water level will have restaurants, the street level boutique tenants, and the Centre and Foundation will have the upper two floors; the top floor will contain offices and the other level will be galleries. Robert's art will be on display including originals and prints. The collection will include Birgit's photographs. Art of other people connected to nature are planned for the future, so the exhibitions will be ever changing. In addition, there will be video monitors and interactive applications involving stories about the art.
From the offices there will be an education department and a technical department involved in active outreach in the Foundation's efforts to reconnect people to the world of nature. Education at the post secondary level will be associated with Royal Roads University.
