- SAFE For Animals
SAFE (Save Animals From Exploitation) is New Zealand's leading animal advocacy organisation. Founded in 1932, SAFE aims to make significant improvements to the lives of animals by raising awareness, challenging cruel practice and changing attitudes. SAFE undertakes high-profile campaigns, public stalls, displays, demonstrations, meetings, education services and research to foster a more informed understanding of the state of human-animal relations in New Zealand. SAFE is a registered charity and is solely reliant on the goodwill of its supporters. It does not receive any government funding.
- SPCA Otago
SPCA Otago was formed in 1882, and has been located in Opoho, Dunedin since 1948. It services the largest SPCA region within New Zealand. The Society rescues, rehabilitates and rehomes around 1,700 animals every year; animals that are sick, injured, lost, abused or simply abandoned. The SPCA is the only charity with the legal power to protect all animals, including prosecuting offenders under the Animal Welfare Act 1999. The SPCA relies entirely on the generosity of the community to do its work, as it receives no government funding, despite acting as a law enforcement agency.
