KETLA - SAYING GOOD-BYE - WHITE RHINO by Reggie Correll
  KETLA - SAYING GOOD-BYE
Subject: WHITE RHINO
Dimensions (inches): 9 x 14
Medium: CLAY MODEL- WORK IN PROGRESS
Description: KETLA was probably the most magnificent event I have ever experience in my life. Over several months of sculpting this wonderful creature I became infatuated with his being. His presence was one that commanded my full emergence. I found I could not wait to get there each day to observe him while I sculpted him several times over. My clay seemed to take on a life of its own. This awakening within me has been my experience with other animals I have sculpted since Ketla. The zoo soon saw my attachment to him and allowed me into Ketla's den. While with him I was able to breathe in his breath and feel his magnificent horn that he held so proudly. His skin, under his neck in the folds were as soft as a baby's behind. When I looked into his tired eyes I knew he would be leaving us soon, and tears flowed down my eyes in gratitude of being part of his last days here. It was then that I realized how insignificant we are in comparison to the exquisite creature. On the day he left this earth he took with him a part of me that will always morn and cherish him. When I cast him I will have a gold bronze tear flowing from his eye as a way of saying good-bye.
