Twenty yards out from the Clipper Odyssey, she disappears in a thick bank of fog. Around us, eerie and muffled moans, whistles, and shreaks can be heard. A Parakeet Auklet swims past. A curious pod of juvenile Stellar Sea Lions pops up around us, barking and yelping; periscoping up and down, turning this way and that. The natives checking out the tourists. Ahead a tall wall of rock rises up. Common and Thick-billed Murres, Tufted and Horned Puffins, Glouscous-winged Gulls, and Pigeon Guillemots begin pouring off the cliff face at our approach. Hall Island.

Walking in Joyce Kilmer Memorial Forest, in the mountains of North Carolina can easily be compared to walking in a cathedral. Huge Tulip Poplar trees arch over the trail. The May air is sweetened with the scent of wildflowers. Bird's songs mingle, sweetly permeating the air. Bright yellow butterflies waft through the canopy.

"If you grow old, go by all means, but if you are young, stay away until you grow older. The scenery in Alaska is so much grander than anything else of the kind in the world that, once beheld, all other scenery becomes flat and insipid. It is not well to dull one's capacity for such enjoyment by seeing the finest first." -- Henry Gannett,
