Evening Encounter (SOLD)
(2012)
Subject: Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), Blue-winged Grasshopper (Trimerotropis cyaneipennis) and Piņon Pine (Pinus edulis)
Dimensions (inches): 10.25 x 13.25
Medium: Transparent Watercolor
Description: Among the hidden wonders of the 'Sky Islands' of southwestern United States and northwestern Mexico, the nocturnal Ringtail is admired for its large eyes and appealing demeanor. An agile, expert climber in rocky terrain, its omnivorous diet includes insects, small mammals, and fruit, thus partaking of the variety provided within this ecosystem. Internationally important for their outstanding biological diversity, these forested mountain ranges are separated by stretches of desert and grasslands. Because of its topographic complexity, the region has both subtropical and temperate climates, supporting many species found nowhere else in the United States. This ecosystem is continually threatened by climate change, resource extraction, fire suppression, and land development. This painting of the Ringtail (Bassariscus astutus), Blue-winged Grasshopper (Trimerotropis cyaneipennis) and Piņon Pine (Pinus edulis) is one of a series depicting the wonders found in this habitat and was created to promote curiosity and appreciation of the region's biological diversity.
