Subject: An Echinda mother with it's baby puggle Dimensions (inches): 24 x 28 Medium: Graphite Pencil Description: An Australian Echidna with it's baby puggle out of the poach and the mother is protecting it. A puggle is hatched from a single soft-shelled egg about 10 days after being laid and incubated in a small skin pouch on the abdomen of the mother where it laps milk secreted from paired mammary glands. Dispelled from pouch into a concealed burrow once spines appear at around 63 days. At birth approx. 15mm long and weighing around 0.3 grams.
