Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre |
|
|
Island Wildlife Natural Care Centre is a registered charity dedicated to the rescue and rehabilitation of sick, injured and orphaned wild animals. They have earned permits from The Ministry of the Environment, Environment Canada and the Department of Fisheries and Oceans. Island Wildlife cares for all indigenous species from the Gulf Islands and Vancouver Island. Their facility is the only wildlife centre in British Columbia offering year round rescue and treatment to marine mammals. Their emphasis is on alternative, nontoxic treatments such as homeopathy, herbal remedies and physical therapies. They feel that these treatments, in combination with conventional veterinary protocols, offer their wild patients the best chance for survival. The staff at Island Wildlife believe that quality of life is everything. In keeping with that philosophy they maintain no display animals or permanent captives. Their facility is a wildlife hospital. They are sometimes told that many of the species they treat are not threatened populations. While this may be true, the work they do means everything to a fawn who has just been made an orphan by an automobile, to a Harbour Seal pup dying slowly on a beach because its mother drowned in a fishing net, or to a Bald Eagle, flightless and dying from lead poisoning. They see animals as independent lives, not as populations. If today they can prevent the needless suffering of a single animal, then they have done important work. |
