ECOCEAN Inc |
|
|
ECOCEAN Inc., a registered not-for-profit whale shark research and conservation organization with offices in Australia and the U.S., . Since its inception in 1999, ECOCEAN has led the field in whale shark research and conservation efforts first in Australia, and now in various locations around the globe. As host of the publicly accessible Online Whale Shark Photo-Identification Library (www.whaleshark.org), ECOCEAN has encouraged participation from scientists and members of the public from over 45 countries through the dissemination of whale shark awareness and educational materials and photo-identification techniques. It is only through the public's help and the method of 'citizen science' they support that their whale shark photo-id library has become the largest and most successful shark population monitoring database of its kind. ECOCEAN further engages whale shark ecotour operators to minimize species impact by assisting in the development of whale shark interaction guidelines. They work not only to ensure minimal impact on the threatened whale shark (listed as 'vulnerable to extinction' on the IUCN's red list of threatened species), but also to assure the long-term success of sustainable whale shark ecotourism as an alternative to traditional shark fisheries. As an organization with a duel research and conservation mission, they engage members of the public to help scientists and conservationists learn more about whale shark numbers and habits to ultimately assist the future survival of the biggest fish in the sea. |
