BIOPHILIA--CRESTED CHAMELEON & WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA - Chameleon/Gorilla by Carel Brest van Kempen
BIOPHILIA--CRESTED CHAMELEON & WESTERN LOWLAND GORILLA
Subject: Chameleon/Gorilla
Dimensions (inches): 22 x 17
Medium: Acrylic on Illustration Board
Description: The Crested Chameleon (Chamaeleo cristatus) is rather common in primary rain forests of moderate elevation from Eastern Nigeria through much of Congo-Kinshasa. It forages among low bushes and branches near the ground. This habitat is shared by the largest of three populations of Gorilla (Gorilla gorilla). This painting was inspired during a hike through a dark forest in the Central African Republic. Although I only saw signs of them, this area contains the greatest density of western lowland gorillas. It was the sight of a damselfly (family Coenagrionidae) suddenly perching on an illuminated branch before me that caused me to spontaneously visualize something close to this image. In the background of this piece is the Black Dwarf Hornbill (Tockus hartlaubi).
