Phoenix
Subject: Mythical Bird
Dimensions (inches): 16 x 9 x 6
Medium: Paulownia
Description: In Japan, as earlier in China, the mythical Phoenix was the symbol of the Empress and it represented fire, the sun, justice, obedience, and fidelity. According to legend, the Phoenix appeared only rarely, in times of peace and prosperity, or to mark the beginning of a new era. During these visits it was said to roost only in paulownia trees (the wood of which was used for this sculpture). The Phoenix was considered both a symbol of peace (when it appeared on earth) and a symbol of disharmony (when it departed earth for its home in the heavens). Phoenix received the Cleo Hartwig Award at Audubon Artists, Inc. 66th Annual Juried Exhibition in New York City.
