Regal Blues - Yellow-Crowned Night Heron by Josh Tiessen
  Regal Blues  (2014)
Subject: Yellow-Crowned Night Heron
Dimensions (inches): 9 x 9 x 2
Medium: Oil on Masonite
Description: Inspired by my trip to the gulf coast of Florida, for this painting I wished to capture in an anthropomorphic way the noble quality of this Yellow-Crowned Night Heron, whose countenance indicated a somber look of contemplation. I hadn't given much thought to how it related to me personally, until a fellow artist saw this painting hanging at the Art Gallery of Burlington and said the bird reminded her of me, both in its physicality and personality. It was then that I realized, in spite of efforts to stand tall and stay strong, I had been feeling introspective and even a little blue when I painted this. In choosing the classic cameo frame, perhaps I was completing this self-portrait! It's fascinating as artists how much of our own person we infuse subconsciously into our work, sometimes revealing more of ourselves than we intended to the keen observer.
