Subject: Hawaiian Monk Seals (Monachus schauinslandi) Dimensions (inches): 5 x 7 Medium: Colour Pencil Description: Although their numbers are increasing slightly, there are still only about 1300 left, most of them in the North Western Hawaiian Islands. Their preferred food other than fish, the rock lobster, was overfished there and has not recovered, leading to the seals moving south to the main islands where quiet, protected whelping beaches are more rare. The creation of Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument which encloses the NWHI will hopefully give them a better chance at recovery.
