Zebra Grouping - Stripe Convention
(2011)
Subject: African Wildlife Dimensions (inches): 14 x 18 Medium: Acrylic on board Description: This painting is from my own reference photograph that I took during my trip to Tanzania in 2004. The interesting point is the unusual thought that ‘black and white stripes' serves as an effective camouflage. The way it works is that the predators, who see in ‘black and white' see the grouping of zebras as a mass of black and white and appear as a formidable adversary. It is for this reason that the zebras instinctively rest with their head on the torso of an adjacent zebra and they would in turn do the same. The group is able to have ‘eyes and ears' in all directions. As soon as the group disbands into smaller groups, the prey (lions, hyenas) would notice the smaller size of the subgroups and the game would then be on. Recently selected for the 2011 AFC Annual Juried Art Exhibition.
