Perched on the Brink - Northern spotted owl by Raymond Easton
  Perched on the Brink
Subject: Northern spotted owl
Dimensions (inches): 16 x 12
Medium: Acrylic on clayboard
Description: The title 'Perched on the Brink' is representational of the current status on Northern spotted owls. For years, their steady decline in numbers has sparked fierce debate between environmentalists and the timber industry. It saddens me to think that this beautiful owl is now listed as threatened by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and as endangered by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, due to the deforestation of their old-growth forest habitat. I painted a single branch and obscure background to symbolize the loss of habitat and the uncertain future of this magnificent creature. We, as a species, need to put aside our arrogance, pay attention to what our natural world is saying to us, and listen. Above all we need to act, before these and other precious 'gems' are lost forever.
