Aleta Karstad

I paint to capture and express my impressions of nature, to share the rhythms and excitement of the world as I perceive it. But perhaps an even greater imperative for me is to communicate the truth and essence of life, and record how things are at a particular place and time - to give some clues as to how life works and how precious it is in its natural state. I paint while in the field with my biologist husband Fred Schueler, and he surveys the biodiversity of my painting sites.

Most of my work is done out of doors, en plein air. I love the texture and immediacy of oils, though I also love to paint intimate watercolour studies of plants and small creatures.

I record my observations and impressions in journal accounts associated with the paintings and post it all on my blog
