Tricia Zimic

This current series is my visceral response to our impact on the environment that is in juxtaposition and in relationship with indigenous wild animals. I use clay; fiberglass, found objects or oil paint to show the effects man-made habitats have on rare or endangered species. These collaborations are sometimes ‘happy accidents’ and other times frictional or disquieting.  I have seen animals trying to survive in the most unlikely places; birds nesting in high-tension towers, salamanders making homes in beer cans, bears, coyote and bobcat roaming in urban yards -- all victims of urban sprawl.

Once these animals lose their natural homes they will disappear, adapt to an unnatural environment, or if they can, move away.  This is something we don’t hear or see happen. I want people to know what we are losing.  Is it right (or fair) to take their world away to make room for ours?

I paint what I cannot create in clay. As an illustrator, I use this opportunity to tell a story or set a mood more deeply in my paintings.  Showing fight scenes among native and non-native birds, a rush of a pack of wolves running through city streets or a bobcat roaming through an abandoned building all have an impact that far outreaches the boundaries of sculpture.
