Suzanne Belair Our world is moving faster and faster and demands on our attention are constant as well as simultaneous. I like to create images that depict the accessible beauty, calm and intricacy of nature. As a visual artist and biologist, I also like to present unusual aspects of my subjects, whether traditional or unusual and I love to marry my two passions.
It is always interesting for me to contrast the joy and exuberance of natural elements with the controlled forms found in objects elaborated by humans. This possible and fragile equilibrium between imagined object and natural creation usually emphasizes nature's beauty.
Poetry and tranquillity in nature are often revealed through a close-up view, which I love. I want my viewers to experience the nourishment and renewal of slowing down and focusing attention on details often overlooked. I like overhead views and exploring mirrored reflections, forcing the viewer to stop in order to better understand what the eye is perceiving.
I work with oil paints in thin layers. If I add thicker layers for lights, I sometimes let it dry partially and then remove some before reapplying. However, I adjust the technique depending on the subject and the desired effect. I usually prepare the ground with a brunaille made of burnt umber or burnt sienna and titanium white while portraits are usually in grisaille. If the subject calls for more transparency, the pigments are directly applied to the gessoed canvas. I often work from light to dark.
I think there is always something new to learn. A new series is often developed according to a new challenge, a new technique to master, a question that needs answering. I believe this process is what fuels growth in art.
I use first quality pre-mounted and gessoed canvases made in Canada. I sometimes texture the canvas with additional layers of gesso or flexible paste. For protection and conservation, a minimum of three coats of non-yellowing varnish are applied.
