Martin Scuffins

I have been fascinated by wildlife and, in particular, birds of prey since early childhood. I now live with my partner, Talia, and our son Patrick on our twenty acre Trust for Nature covenanted property in Victoria, Australia. Here I care for injured birds of prey under a government permit whilst focusing much of my remaining time and energy on my artwork - expressing the beauty of the creatures that surround and inspire me in mediums of pastel and charcoal.

I am lucky enough to have many of my 'artistic models' close at hand and, as I train raptors for rehabilitation and education, I often get to know my subject very intimately indeed. I strive to represent the birds I draw as realistically as possible (without necessarily going overboard with detail) whilst also trying to choose postures that capture something of their unique personality and spirit.

Through my art, I hope to inspire people to new levels of appreciation and empathy for birds of prey and our precious and delicate natural world. Birds of Prey, as top predators, are vulnerable to changes in their environment. They are resilient, but not indestructable. The widespread decimation of peregrine falcon populations in the 1960s and seventies due to overuse of pesticides taught us that our own complacency and apathy are the worst enemies of these magnificent creatures.

Although my subject matter is primarily dominated by the wildlife I know and love, my other interests in life occassionally infiltrate my work. Thus you may notice the occasional human portrait, old car or domestic pet making an appearance!

Please feel free to comment on my work and sign my guestbook..
