ARTIST’S STATEMENT

My goal is to make a living as a painter in Zambia. I have so far managed to do so in Italy, but the attractions and economies of the countries are obviously very different. People visit Italy for the art (& history, architecture, food, way of life, etc). People visit Zambia for the animals and nature, or they come for business, with NGOs or embassies.

When I started out in Italy most of my clients were visitors, but more and more they are residents or Italians who are patrons of the arts. Zambia will be a challenge because it takes time to understand the light, learn the anatomy of the animals, get connected, make my name known, etc. Zambia presents many challenges!

Because I believe more in the sustainability of trade, as opposed to aid, by taking my business to Zambia, I will be providing jobs to a few Zambians. The carpenter who makes my stretchers and the studio assistant who stretches the canvases, paints edges black, puts on hangers and other miscellany tasks, appreciate the opportunity to work and I am able to spend more time painting. Any foreigner who stays in the Luangwa Valley ends up hiring several Zambians (chief’s orders), so its a win-win for all. I also donate back to the community a percentage of my profit from shows, either directly to local schools, the S. Luangwa Conservation Society or by sponsoring teens by paying their school fees in exchange for piece work.

I am painting what inspires me, and that is ever changing. Hopefully my love of nature comes through in my artwork! Thank you for looking at my site.
