Jonathan RobertsIt is very important that my work has a sense of movement, as if the animal is simply taking a really long pause, rather than just being stopped. In order to create that, I try to imagine myself as the animal that I am building, in order to understand the movements before and after the moment of pause.
I want to introduce familiar animals in a way that creates unfamiliar thoughts. An octopus is a slimy mass out of the water, often feared without reason, but is the epitome of grace and coordination under the surface.
We only protect what we love. It is easy to love otters, and whales, furry things, cute things and majestic things, but it is much harder to love something that we think of as ugly, or scary. Humanity can protect itself, although it may not always choose to do so, while everything else is subject to our frivolity and pettiness. If we do not make conscious effort to protect life in all forms, most of those forms can do nothing for themselves, so it is our responsibility to not destroy them, and the planet we all live on.
