Some time ago I came across an old kangaroo dozing, as the sun warmed his bones. Eventually I decided to paint him.

I had recently lost my dear old dog Gus. After I had finished the painting I realised it was really a portrait of my beloved dog in his last days, in the guise of the old roo.

Old age, and the peaceful acceptance of the inevitable, was common to both, and as an intuitive, interpretative artist the two had fused, without me being aware of it at the time of painting.

It is a treasured part of my own collection, and I hope the feeling in the painting is conveyed to you as well.
