AFC Flag Expedition #6:
Cross River Gorillas - The Most Endangered Primate
Expedition Artist: Daniel Taylor
Purpose: To observe the critically endangered Cross River Gorilla in its remaining habitat, conduct the first artistic field study of the primate in the wild and support conservation efforts through fundraising and education.

EXPEDITION SCHEDULE

October 29-30: Arrival, acclimatization and preparations. A final briefing session in Buea. Equipment and food will be prepared and purchased before driving to the field office in Menji, Lebialem Highlands, South West Province of Cameroon.

October 31-November 1: Traveling. The trip to Menji will take 6-8 hours. From Menji we will travel further into the remote areas of Lebialem, a trip of 3-4 hours using a 4WD. Before we enter the Bechati-Besali-Fossimondi forest, we will first visit the local fon (chieftain or king) to introduce ourselves and explain the reason of our visit. The road ends in Bechati and from there we will undertake a 4-hour hike along a river, passing Old Bechati and the last farms, until we arrive at the research camp, deep in the highland rainforest. From there we will undertake daily surveys, from 6:00-16:00hr.

November 2-6: Field Surveys. Surveys will be conducted in the Bechati-Besali-Fossimondi forest.

November 7-8: Education. We walk back to Bechati and conduct an art workshop for the pupils and teachers of Bechati Primary School. We will bring painting and drawing materials for the children and will work with them on large educational mural paintings of the Cross River Gorilla and other animals inside and outside the school building.

November 9: Traveling. We will use a 4WD vehicle to drive back to the field office in Menji. From Menji we will travel to upper Nkongho-Mbo forests. Here we will first visit the local fon (chieftain or king).

November 10-13: Field Surveys. Surveys will be conducted in the upper Nkongho-Mbo forests.

November 14-15: Education. We walk and drive back to Nkongho and conduct an art workshop for the pupils and teachers of Nkongho Primary School. We will deliver painting and drawing supplies for the children and will create large educational mural paintings of the Cross River Gorilla and other animals inside and outside the school building.

November 16: Traveling. We will use a 4WD vehicle to drive back to the field office in Menji. From Menji we will travel to the Mak-Betchou forest. Also here we will first visit the local fon (chieftain or king) and explain the reason of our visit.

November 17-19: Field Surveys. Surveys will be conducted in the Mak-Betchou forest.

November 20-21: Education. We walk and drive back to Andu and conduct an art workshop for the pupils and teachers of Andu Primary School. We will deliver painting and drawing materials for the children and will create large educational mural paintings of the Cross River Gorilla and other animals inside and outside the school building.

November 22: Traveling. We will use a 4WD vehicle to drive back to the office in Buea.

November 22-25: Observation and painting. Spending sdays in Limbe Wildlife Center for detailed observation and artistic study of the Cross River Gorilla, the East Nigeria Chimpanzee and other indigenous species (Guenons, Drills, Mandrills).

November 24: Art Workshop. Holding an art workshop in collaboration with Limbe Wildlife Center and artists from Limbe, Buea and Douala.

November 26-30: Launch of the collaborative art exhibition including a media event to attract prominent conservationists and government officials, as well as prominent coverage by TV and newspapers.

December 1: Finalizing expedition and meetings, preparation of educational posters.

December 2: Return flight to Vancouver, BC, Canada.
