 Marine Copper Sculptures |

Eric Kraft"I have been working with copper and brass since the mid 1970s when I apprenticed for a short time under renowned metal sculptor Kevin Jenkins. Over the past three decades I have borrowed much of the style that he taught me and, as with my metal, have “hammered” out a style of my own.
To maintain the highest standards, I personally perform all aspects involved in my work. The process begins by sketching out an idea for the design and then transferring elements of this drawing to the metal (usually copper, sometimes brass or stainless steel). I cut out the rough design using hand tin snips or an electric plasma arc cutter and cold-hammer it on a sandbag or hand bend it to a three-dimensional shape. At this point, more cutting and fitting is necessary as the individual elements are joined by silver or bronze brazing. Additional heat treating with the torch “paints” the colorful patina of reds, golds, blues and greens. Then several coats of clear enamel protect the piece. Finally, it is joined to a wooden or stone base that has been carefully selected and hand finished by me to complement the overall design of the final sculpture.
Ideas for my subject matter originate from many years of living, working, diving and fishing around the beautiful turquoise waters of Southeast Florida and the Bahamas. In my marine wildlife sculptures, I attempt to convey the grace and beauty of my subject matter through exaggerating the colors and features of the species being sculpted. No assistants are employed in the creation of my work. Please feel free to ask any questions about the sculptures or the sculpting process."
