Artist's Statement

I wish to encourage awareness of the interconnected nature of our world and the species we risk losing through over-consumption of resources. So far, I have donated part of the purchase price of several sculptures to protect African Wild Dogs, protect Monarch Butterflies, fund research to save frogs and amphibians, help build a tiger corridor in Southeast Asia, preserve sea turtle nesting beaches in Nicaragua, support the rescue of abused horses, and protect and expand desert tortoise habitat in California's Mohave Desert. Sculpting in stone is a joyful process for me--noisy, dusty, always an adventure, a piece of the earth and an expression of my heart.

I celebrate the variety of animals we live with through my stylized stone sculptures. Each sculpture is one-of-a-kind and the design is exclusive to that piece. Every sculpture is truly unique and reflects my view that each creature is special and significant.

I draw from my 20-year career as a Disney Animator to create expressive poses. Research is an important part of my creative process, and I must know my subject well, both inside and out, before making a sculpture. Then the elements of design can be used to communicate the spirit of the animal through the pose.

Stone doesn't move, but it does when light plays over a curved surface and stops abruptly at a fine edge. The eye moves over a sculpture at different speeds depending on the composition and texture of the surface. Movement and time, the two aspects of animation which may appear to be absent, are actually present in the eye of the viewer and guided by the thoughtful design of the sculptor.
