Growing up in Colorado and Montana, Chapin fell in love with nature and came to appreciate it at an early age through hours of hunting and fishing. She developed her understanding of water as she grew up through junior Olympics swimming competitions in Billings and then later in Duluth, Minnesota. In high school she had her first introduction to the ocean and after college she met and married a sailor/scientist with whom she sailed competitively for many years.

The result of these experiences culminated in plein air paintings of water and water related subjects. Although she began painting in 3rd grade she considers she considers only her professional career of painting since 1980. Living in Maryland since 1978, she started with the one-design boating on the Chesapeake Bay, then later switching into plein air paintings of the coast of France and water gardens. Depicting water and water related subject not only appeals to her artistic nature but her desire to cherish this most precious and least appreciated resource. All of this has come to full circle as a mature artist currently working on series for conservation fundraisers related to wildlife refuges, wetlands, rivers and estuaries as well as the ocean waters.

She believes it is important to give back to the systems which help protect the natural environments of the US, the Park Service, Fish and Wildlife and Bureau of Land Management for whom her father worked, donating a portion of all her sales of all works sold for this purpose.

Chapin's depiction of water have been included in more than 40 Museum and Gallery exhibits including the Louvre, Grand Palais in Paris; RJ Schaffer Museum; Colorado Historical Museum; National Arts Club; the Audubon and American Embassies world wide. Corporate collectors include John Nuveen Company, Federal Reserve Bank, Jewett Inc., Pardoe Properties and Shultz Inc. among others. Solo exhibitions include museums and galleries in New York; Washington DC; California and Connecticut. Locally she has been the recipient of the Best in Show Easton Rotary Club Exhibition, and President's Choice Award in the Chesapeake Bay foundation exhibition. Her work was selected for inclusion in the Ketterer Marine Exhibition/Auction in Hamburg. The exhibition represented 17th - 20th century paintings in the marine genre of which she was the 20th century representative. Published in the Who's Who in American Art her many accomplishments are documented. Her works have been goodwill ambassadors for the State Department exhibited in embassies in Bogota, Colombia; Sanaa, Yemen; Quito, Ecuador; United Arab Emirates; Abu Dhabi and Baku, Azerbaijan. Biographies have been included in the Allgemeines Kunstlerlexikon* (56 Vol. Dictionary of Artists), which is the standard for reference of Museum's worldwide; Dictionary of Sea Painters, book by Edward Archibald, London; Yacht Portraits, book published by Sheridan Press/Overseas Press, Milan, IT. She has written articles for the American Artist Magazine and been interviewed by US Art, Chesapeake Bay Magazine etc. She has studied at the National Academy with Raymond Kinstler in a master class and Sam Adoquei in an Academic Atelier with Sam Adoquei. She published a handbook on plein air painting entitled Capturing Life and Movement en Plein Air in 2000 which has sold out of its second edition. She received a degree from MWC/UVA in 1976 and a graduate studies certificate in French Studies, USDA, Washington, DC 1990-1993.

Chapin has been selected as a signature/artist member at various times in her career of the following organizations: National Arts Club, Societe Nationale Des Beaux Arts, Artist Fellowship, Artist of America, American Artists Professional League, California Art Club, Southern Vermont Art Center and American Society of Marine Artists. A leader in the plein air painting genre she founded the Professional Plein Air Painters group 7 years ago, the National Academy of Professional Plein Air Painters (NAPPAP). Also she founded of the NAPPAP Cultural Alliance and the NY Central Park Paintout. The combination of which totals a membership of 237.
